Performance Max or Search campaigns: which suits a Singapore SME?
Performance Max promises reach across all of Google from one campaign. Here is when it helps, when Search is the safer choice, and how to run both.
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that shows your ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from a single campaign. Google's automation decides where your ads appear, who sees them and how much to bid, based on the goals and assets you give it.
Where Performance Max does well
- Businesses with good conversion tracking, so the system learns from real enquiries or sales.
- Advertisers with strong images and videos, since many placements are visual.
- E-commerce stores with a product feed.
- Accounts that already have enough conversion data to guide the automation.
Where Search campaigns are safer
For many service businesses with modest budgets, a well-built Search campaign is still the better starting point. You choose the keywords, see the exact searches you paid for, and can exclude the ones that waste money. Performance Max gives less visibility into where each dollar went, and with little conversion data it can spend on cheaper placements that bring clicks but few enquiries.
The deciding factor is tracking
Performance Max optimises towards whatever you tell it is a conversion. If page views or button clicks are counted as conversions, it will find more of those, not more customers. Before testing it, make sure only real enquiries, such as form submissions, calls and WhatsApp messages, are marked as primary conversions.
Running both
A common approach is to keep Search campaigns for your most important service keywords and test Performance Max alongside them with a separate budget. Google has added more controls over time, such as brand exclusions and negative keywords, which help keep the two from competing for the same searches. Compare them on cost per enquiry and lead quality, not on clicks or impressions.
