SEO when Google answers with AI: what still works for local businesses
AI Overviews now sit above many search results. For service businesses in Singapore, the fundamentals matter more than ever.
Since 2024, Google has been showing AI Overviews, short AI-written summaries, at the top of many search results. For simple informational questions, some people now get their answer without clicking any website. Understandably, business owners ask whether SEO is still worth it.
Why local service searches are different
Someone searching for a painting contractor in Punggol or office cleaning in the CBD is not looking for a summary. They want a business they can trust and contact. For these searches, Google still shows local results, maps and websites, and the businesses that appear are the ones Google understands best.
What still works
- A separate, clear page for each main service, saying what you do, where, and for whom.
- Accurate business information that is consistent across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Content that answers the real questions customers ask, written by people who do the work.
- A fast, mobile-friendly website with a clear way to call, WhatsApp or enquire.
- Genuine reviews from real customers.
Being a source, not just a result
AI Overviews draw on web pages that explain a topic clearly and credibly. Pages with specific, useful detail, such as how a process works, what affects pricing, or what to check before hiring, are more likely to be referenced than thin pages stuffed with keywords. Writing for customers first is also what search engines reward.
Measure what matters
Rankings and traffic are useful signals, but enquiries are the goal. Track calls, WhatsApp messages and forms from organic visitors, and watch which pages bring them in. That tells you where to invest next.
